Island-Hopping Indonesia: A 3-Week Journey of Surfing, Culture, and Natural Wonders
Indonesia is a backpacker's paradise, with an incredible mix of culture, natural beauty, and world-class surf spots. My 3-week journey through Indonesia was nothing short of amazing, and I can't wait to share my experiences with you.
Pre-Trip Planning
Before embarking on my trip, I did some research and planning. Indonesia is budget-friendly, but flights, visas, vaccinations, and travel insurance should be taken into consideration. Also compare prices for ho(s)tels on various sites - for me I found booking.com always offered the best options.
Also check out my PACKING LIST. Buying (western) stuff in Indonesia can be quite expensive.
Week 1: Bali
I kicked off my adventure in Bali, the island of the gods. Bali is known for its world-class surf spots, stunning beaches, and rich culture. I stayed in a cozy hostel in Kuta and quickly made friends with fellow backpackers. One night, we had a bonfire on the beach, sipped cold Bintang beer, and shared travel stories.
The next few days were spent relaxing on the beaches of Seminyak and Canggu. I took a surf lesson in Canggu, where the waves were perfect for beginners. The sunset surf session was a magical experience.
Next, I headed to Ubud, the cultural heart of Bali. I stayed in a homestay and spent my days exploring the Tegallalang Rice Terraces, the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, and the Pura Taman Saraswati Temple. The highlight of my Ubud experience was taking a cooking class and learning how to make traditional Balinese dishes.
Week 2: Java
I took a ferry from Bali to Java and explored the vibrant city of Yogyakarta. On the way to Yogyakarta, I had stops at Mt. Ijen and Mt. Bromo - both are active volcanoes which offer a great experience. in Yogya, I stayed in a budget hotel and ventured out to see the famous Borobudur Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in the world. The temple was breathtaking, and I was in awe of the intricate carvings and architecture. I also visited the Prambanan Temple, a Hindu temple complex, and took a hike to Mount Merapi, another active volcano known for its scenic views.
Week 3: Komodo and Raja Ampat
I flew from Java to Flores and hopped on a boat to Komodo National Park. Komodo is home to the famous Komodo dragon, the largest lizard in the world. I went hiking in the park, visited the Pink Beach, and took a boat tour around the islands. One night, we had a beach party under the stars with fellow travelers, and it was an unforgettable experience.
Finally, I headed to Raja Ampat, a group of islands in West Papua known for its incredible marine biodiversity. I stayed in a guesthouse and went diving to see the incredible coral reefs and marine life. The colors and variety of fish were astounding, and I felt like I was in a dream.
Surfing, Culture, and Natural Wonders
The natural wonders of Indonesia are simply stunning. The Tegallalang Rice Terraces in Ubud were breathtaking, and the hike to the top of Mount Merapi offered scenic views. The Pink Beach in Komodo National Park was a highlight of my trip, with its crystal-clear waters and pink sand.
Budget Tips
Indonesia is a budget-friendly destination, but there are always ways to save money. I stayed in budget accommodations and ate at local warungs (small restaurants), and avoided buying souvenirs at touristy markets. I als used public transportation or rented a scooter to get around.
Final Thoughts
Indonesia is a destination that has something for everyone. From world-class surf spots and stunning beaches to cultural experiences and natural wonders, Indonesia is a must-visit for adventurous travelers. Island-hopping in Indonesia is a great way to experience the country's diversity and see all that it has to offer. So pack your bags, grab your surfboard, and get ready for an adventure of a lifetime!
